Rain, no play

The West Indies chance of retaining the Wisden Trophy suffered a big blow today as play was abandoned because of rain on day two of the second and final Test against England at Riverside Ground.

Heavy rain fell throughout the day, making the pitch unplayable. The umpires conducted a ground inspection in the afternoon and with no prospect of the weather improving they decided to abandon play for the day.

England will resume on 302 for 2 tomorrow, with Alastair Cook 126 not out and nightwatchman James Anderson unbeaten on 4.

Captain Chris Gayle and Lionel Baker have taken the wickets to fall.

Gayle had captain Andrew Strauss caught behind by Denesh Ramdin for 26, while Baker bowled Ravi Bopara for 108.

England lead 1-0 in the two-match series and need only a draw to regain the Wisden Trophy they lost recently in the Caribbean.
