Swine flu benefits Dominican Republic

The President of the Dominican Republic confirmed that the outbreak of H1N1 Influenza in Mexico has led to a boost in his country’s tourism sector.



President Leonel Fernandez said tourists who were heading to Mexico have been diverted to the Dominican Republic.



He also said despite the global economic downturn, the number of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic so far this year has been higher than during the similar period in 2008.



Figures from the Dominican Republic\'s central bank show that the country received 3.9 million foreign tourists in 2008 and 1.1 million during the first three months of this year.
