Uncertainty still surrounds Asafa’s participation at Grand Prix
There is still uncertainty surrounding Asafa Powell’s participation at the 2009 Reebok Grand Prix, which will be held on Saturday, May 30 at the Icahn Stadium in New York City.
His coach, Stephen Francis said although the former 100-metre record holder has been responding well to training, more time is needed to assess his race fitness.
Powell has not competed since he injured himself while anchoring Jamaica’s men’s 4 by 100-metre team at the Penn Relays Carnival on April 25 in Philadelphia, USA.
The injury has caused Powell not to honour his commitment at a Super Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar on May 8, the second consecutive year that he had to pull out of the IAAF event.
But while there is uncertainty surrounding Powell, his MVP teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser is expected to compete at the Reebok Classic.
Coach Francis said the Olympic 100-metre champion is betting back to her best form after spending three days in hospital following a surgery.
