CARICOM sets up task force
CARICOM leaders have agreed to the establishment of a five member task force to guide the region’s response to the global economic crisis.
The task force is headed by Barbadian economist Dr Delisle Worrell.
CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow said there’s urgent need for the regional grouping to implement a clear strategy in response to the crisis.
He said the task force will look specifically at the matter of access to funds agreed by the G-20 grouping of the world’s leading industrialized states, as part of a recent initiative to structure a new global environment.
He said the region also intends to use the upcoming special United Nations General Assembly meeting on the world economic situation to interact with high ranking officials from the G20 countries.
Host Prime Minister Patrick Manning is further anticipating a CARICOM leaders’ engagement with United States President Barack Obama later this year.
However he’s suggesting that the region will need to come up with some homegrown solutions before then.
