Federer defeats Acasuso in French Open
Roger Federer of Switzerland mounted a stirring fight back today to defeat Jose Acasuso of Argentina in a tense second-round clash and keep his hopes alive of a first French Open title.
The second seed Federer won the match 7-6, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Fifth seed Juan Martin del Porto of Argentina had no problems beating Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-3, 7-5, 6-0 to book his place in round three.
Number 10 seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia and Number 16 Tommy Robredo of Spain also advanced.
In the women’s draw, American Venus Williams also came close to an early exit, needing to save a match point before defeating Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia also advanced to the third round by defeating Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-2, and American Serena Williams easily beat Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-2, 6-0.
Seventh-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia also advanced, beating Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-0, 6-2. Number 10 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Number 24 Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada also won.
