Integrity Commission members sworn in

Three members of the Guyana Integrity Commission are to be sworn in today by President Bharrat Jagdeo, pending consultation with the leader of the opposition on the appointment of a chairman.

At the weekly Post Cabinet press briefing, Cabinet Secretary Roger Luncheon said the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration had waited long enough for the opposition People’s National Congress/Reform.

The PNC/R leader Robert Corbin is currently recuperating from recent heart surgery in the United States.

He said the PPP/C had written to the PNC/R on several occasions asking them to identify a representative in Corbin’s absence but said they were reluctant to make that move.

He added however that the appointment of a chair of the Commission would be done at a later date.

The matter has been a source of contention between the two major political forces in Guyana with the opposition insisting that the appointment must be subjected to consultation between the President and the leader of the opposition.
