Dominican Republic warns of blackouts

The government in the Dominican Republic has warned of permanent blackouts if it fails to cover the electricity sector\'s US$300 million deficit this year.

Officials yesterday announced a six percent increase in electricity rates.

Minister for the economy, Temistocles Montas, says the deficit is mainly due to the nonpayment of electricity bills.

He says half of the country\'s 2.1 million households have no metres and therefore do not pay for the service.
