The Cuban government has implemented several drastic measures aimed at reviving its struggling economy.
The measures, implemented yesterday follow two weeks of warnings by the government that it could not meet rising electricity demand.
As a result Cubans have reportedly been facing power cuts, longer waits for buses and uncomfortable working conditions.
Havana has been forced to restructure debt and put off payments to foreign businesses.
In addition to the impact of the global financial crisis, the country is also recovering from three hurricanes that struck last year, causing an estimated $10 billion in damage.
