Authorities in Guyana and Suriname are now having discussions to address the issue of cross-border smuggling.

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) said it has already met with the Surinamese Customs Administration for talks on the issue.

The GRA said it has taken several initiatives in an effort to curb the smuggling of goods across the Guyana-Suriname border.

The measures include the expansion of the operations of the Departments of Law Enforcement and Investigation, and Intelligence and Risk Management.

GRA Commissioner General Khurshid Sattaur said the two countries must first address their border dispute if their efforts are to be successful.
