Skerrit denies corruption
Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has denied all allegations of financial corruption in what has become known in his country as the \'garbage bin\' scandal.
Opposition groups have been raising concerns about the high cost of importing 2,700 trash cans for residents of the capital Roseau.
Mr. Skerrit has confirmed that the total bill was US$275,000.
That works out to roughly US$102 per bin for the item, which opponents say usually, costs US$15 .
While Mr. Skerrit has reportedly not addressed the issue directly, he admitted that an officer of the US company that provided the bins is the stepbrother of one of his cabinet ministers.
He also said the minister had no role in the company or the purchase of the bins.
Opposition leaders have said they are not satisfied with the explanation given by the Prime Minister.
Mr. Skerrit said he has ordered a review of government procurement procedures.
