The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, says it has begun distributing food and other supplies to thousands of Zimbabwean prison inmates.

The agency said food shortages in prisons are closely linked to the economic crisis in the country as a whole.

It said it’s working closely with authorities to improve the situation for the most vulnerable detainees.

The ICRC says it has started feeding 6,300 prisoners.

The Red Cross is hoping to feed 10,000 prisoners by the end of the year.

It also plans to renovate prison kitchens and water systems in a bid to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera.
