Jamaica suffer defeat in Eugene
Former World 100 metre record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica suffered a second defeat in eight days at the hands of American Mike Rodgers at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene yesterday.
Powell was second in 10.07seconds, as Rodgers won in a personal best 9.94 seconds. American Walter Dix shared the same time as Powell for third place.
Jamaican Michael Frater was sixth in 10.18 seconds.
Jamaica’s Olympic silver medal winners Kerron Stewart and Shericka Williams had to settle for runner-up spots.
Stewart placed second in 10.90 to Carmelita Jeter of the USA who won in a wind-assisted 10.85. Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica was fourth in 11.10.
Williams, 50.74, had to settle for second to American Sanya Richards in the women’s 400 metres. Richards won in world leading 49.86.
Jamaicans Novlene Williams-Mills and Melaine Walker finished fifth and seventh respectively.
Isa Phillips and Kenia Sinclair of Jamaica also had to settle for runner-up spots.
Phillips clocked 48.55 for second place in the Men’s 400 metre hurdles to American winner Bershawn Jackson, who won in 48.38.. Jamaican Markino Buckley was sixth in 50.80.
Sinclair, two minutes 01.02, was second to American Maggie Vessey in the women’s 800 metres.
