Guyana miners call on government to investigate corruption

Miners in Guyana are calling for the government to investigate corruption among military and police officials.

The miners are accusing the members of the security forces of taking bribes in exchange for protection and other favours.

Their call comes one day after the authorities reportedly detained a military lieutenant and three soldiers on charges of stealing large amounts of gold and cash from a mining camp.

Army Chief of Staff Gary Best says his organisation is now collecting statements from the complainants.

An official of the Gold and Diamond Miners Association says extortion is rampant because the police and military personnel in the remote mining locations have little or no supervision.
