Amerindians to have their say in Guyana land use
Guyana\'s Amerindians are being consulted on the government\'s plans to keep most of the country\'s tropical rainforest intact in exchange for millions of dollars from the international community.
The government hopes to attract millions of dollars per year under its Low-Carbon Development Strategy.
According to Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo, Amerindians would be allowed to decide whether their titled lands should be included in the proposed plan.
He says the money will be used to fund social sectors, develop clean energy, introduce flood-resistant crops and avoid flooding caused by rising sea levels.
Meanwhile, indigenous peoples activist and lawyer David James, says the technical language in the strategy should be properly explained to the indigenous Indians to allow them to make an informed decision.
