Cuba declines readmission into OAS

The Cuban government has declared that it does not want to rejoin the Organization of American States, OAS.

Cuba says it appreciated the invitation from Latin American and Caribbean countries that observed its right to membership.

However it cited what it saw as the long-serving US domination of the group as its main reason for not rejoining.

The OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, is hopeful though that Cuba will change its view as the group moves forward.

He plans to have dialogue with Cuba in a few months to enhance the regional agenda.
