A car killed 28 people and injured dozens of others in the Southern Iraqi town of Bathaa.

BBC reports said the area is a known battleground for rival Shia militias.

The attack came just weeks before US troops are due to withdraw from Iraqi towns and cities.

It is feared that violence may begin to escalate in the region following the recent period when attacks had fallen sharply.

The US plans to withdraw all its troops from Iraq’s major towns and cities by June 30.

It plans to end all combat operations across the country by September 2010.
