The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis is dismissing claims that the proposed union between Trinidad and Tobago and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will destabilise the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The OECS and Trinidad have indicated that they will be seeking to form an economic union in two years, with a gradual move toward a political union.
St Kitts Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas says the proposed grouping would benefit the region.
He believes the union will serve as a model for CARICOM to strengthen regional ties.
Prime Minister Douglas’ comment comes after his Jamaican counterpart Bruce Golding said the proposed union would undermine the integration process.
