England, electing to bat against the West Indies, were 83 for two after 10 overs in their crucial Super Eight match of the 20/20 World Cup at The Oval in England.
Kieron Pollard took the first wicket when he had opener Luke Wright caught by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin for six.
Sulieman Benn had Kevin Pietersen caught by Andre Fletcher for 31.
The winner of the game will join South Africa as the semi-finalists from Group E.
Meanwhile, Pakistan stayed in the hunt for a semifinal place by beating Ireland by 39 runs in the first match at The Oval.
Kamran Akmal top scored with 57 to help Pakistan reach 159 for 5 and in reply Ireland finished on 120 for nine despite 40 from captain and opener William Porterfield.
Pakistan will advance unless New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by a big margin tomorrow at Trent Bridge. In that case the two teams with the highest run rate will go through.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan lead Group ‘F’ with four points each, followed by New Zealand on two.
