Pakistan stayed in the hunt for a semifinal place by beating Ireland by 39 runs in the first match at The Oval.

Kamran Akmal top scored with 57 to help Pakistan reach 159 for 5 and in reply Ireland finished on 120 for 9 despite 40 from captain and opener William Porterfield.

Pakistan will advance unless New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by a big margin tomorrow at Trent Bridge. In that case the two teams with the highest run rate will go through.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan lead Group ‘F’ with four points each, followed by New Zealand on two.
