NOTEWORTHY

A waste of police time?

A few miles after entering St Elizabeth from Westmoreland, I was stopped for speeding, clocked at 70 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Not observing that it was a 50 km/h zone, I thought 70 km/h was well within the 80 km/h speed limit and was unpleasantly surprised to receive a $5,000 fine.

When I enquired why there was a 50 km/h speed limit in the 'bush', I was told that it was a school area.

I did not see any school sign, plus it was approximately 4:00 p.m. and schools were on holidays. The policeman who wrote the ticket was pleasant and seemed to enjoy his job. He did not even ask that I sign the ticket. Could these policemen not be more effectively deployed in St Elizabeth?

Evil leadership?

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) knew that the People's National Party (PNP) would not support extension of the state of emergency for political reasons. The PNP does not care about the protection of the people's rights. And neither did the JLP want to see the PNP support an extension - as it would have thrown a monkey wrench into their political agenda.

We are dealing with two devilish parties. Our lives mean nothing to these two parties. Those of us who go around boasting of being JLP or PNP are displaying our alliance with evil. It is high time we admit the truth - Jamaica is not a nice place. We need to reclaim our country from Bruce and Portia. We need to run them out of town and make it clear that they answer to us, not the other way around.

We need another party

Neither Bruce Golding nor Portia Simpson Miller has a clue that the political games they are playing are like shackles around the ankles of the country, the rope around its neck, the gag in its mouth and the handcuffs around its wrists. We gained independence from Britain on August 6, 1962, and we are still struggling to live together and make laws that will serve all citizens.

Forty-eight years of in-fighting, we still don't have a proper police force, proper politicians or proper laws to protect our people. We still live like crabs in a barrel, still playing the blame game, still putting self before the Constitution, and still telling lies.

As far as I can tell, the only thing these politicians stand for is standing apart. We are tired of Mr Golding's and Mrs Simpson Miller's ignorance and intellectual poverty that dominate our lives. We need a third party to rise from the slumber.
