Reinstate tough cops

Why is it that so many people have to die in Jamaica and the killers never be found? This is crazy, or is it that the law enforcement is too afraid and not willing to take the risk to go and find these emotionless, cold-blooded creatures?

It looks bad when you have to read the news and see all these senseless killings going on, and no one is caught or made to face any punishment for their criminal act. The Government needs to reinstate police officers who know their jobs and how to get those criminals, and penalised those who are friends with the criminals that always give them a tip-off when there's going to be a raid.

This has to stop; and the Govern-ment should use the full force of the law to drive the living fear in the heart of criminals.

Embassy frustrations

It is extremely frustrating dealing with the US Embassy in Kingston. I submitted a visa application on July 21, wishing to participate in an international convention in the US from August 4 - 8. However, the embassy gave me an August 30 interview appointment date. I expressed my concern in acquiring an emergency date. I was informed that I had to accept the original date of August 30 first, which I did, and emailed them requesting an emergency date, which they said they would respond to in five working days, but up to August 8 I have not heard or seen anything.

To add insult to injury, I heard on the news that the embassy will be closed on that date, so what do I do now? I had initially wanted to cancel after I was not awarded an emergency date as I am a full-time college student and will be back in school by the date I was originally awarded.

The US Embassy should revisit their policy towards Jamaican citizens.

Practical education

I really endorse the statements made in Saturday's Letter of the Day, 'Educate for entrepreneurship'. However, I must say that, as a recent past student of the UTech, getting training to become an entrepreneur was one of the privileges I had.

There are many programmes that they have geared towards entreprenuership. They have also made it mandatory, in the Faculty of Education, that all students participate in a group project to form a feasible business. Each group's business plan is assessed by a panel of both internal and external judges. Some of these projects are then transformed into workable business entities. Along with that, students get the opportunity to participate in a com-petition, funded by a financial institu-tion, where they get the opportunity to get up to $300,000 to start their business, provided their business idea wins.

Now, I am out of school and, like most persons, my first option was to search for a job. However, since that is not working out, I am now in the process of drawing on the skills I gathered at UTech to write my business plan and start my own business. Thus, I will be creating jobs while contributing to the development of my country.
