PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC): Former Trinidad and Tobago international Dennis Lawrence has been appointed an assistant coach at English Premiership club Wigan Athletic.

The 36-year-old, who was a member of the T&T team which debuted at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, signed the deal with the north-west England club this week after completing a successful trial period, during which time he worked closely with head coach Roberto Martinez.

Lawrence is a towering six-footer who made 89 appearances for T&T as a tough-nosed central defender.

"This is great news for Dennis and also Trinidad and Tobago, and is just reward for his dedication and determination to become a top coach in the UK," Lawrence's agent Mike Berry said on Wednesday

"Roberto is delighted with him and sees him now as an integral part of his coaching staff in training, and also on Premiership match-days and reserve games."
