England top polo series to finish tour unbeaten

England completed an unbeaten run on their tour of the island on Sunday, when they defeated Jamaica 5-3 in the final match of the international polo series, also involving the visiting Newport team from Rhode Island.

The match was played at the Kingston Polo Club, Caymanas Estates.

Having defeated Jamaica 9-3 in the first match on February 27 as well, England captured the John Tinsley Silver Salvo, which is played for annually between teams.

In Sunday's match, England, in receipt of a one-goal handicap from the locals, raced into a 3-1 lead at the end of the first chukka, courtesy of two penalties from their captain, Tim Bown.

As the match progressed, England led 5-3 going into the fourth and final chukka, but neither team was able to score during this period, enabling England to win comfortably.

Roy Prisk also scored twice for England, while Mark Chin replied with two goals for Jamaica, with Mitta Rousseau getting the other.

The English team was completed by Paul Knight and Tristen Pemble, while Pail Lalor and Mining and Energy Minister James Robertson rounded off the Jamaica team.

Both teams were presented with Delicato wines by Raihn Sibblies, brand manager, J. Wray & Nephew Wines.

Exciting draw

In the first match on Sunday, the visiting Newport team and a Kingston Polo Club team played to an exciting 3-3 draw in their annual contest for the Newport Bowl, which for the third straight year was shared.

Heather Rusuris scored twice for Newport, both goals coming in the second chukka, while teammate Jonas Mikolich scored late in the match to tie the scores.

Scoring for the Kingston Polo Club were Adam Laing, Pieter Barrow and Michael Turner, who scored the goal of the entire tournament - massive under the neck shot from outside the area (right flank), which rocketed between the posts.
