G.C. Foster, UTech on top at Intercol

G.C. Foster College dethroned the University of Technology (UTech) in the female section, while in the male section, UTech held on to their title by a two-point margin as the two-day Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships ended at the University of the West Indies (UWI)/Usain Bolt track yesterday.

In the female section, G.C. Foster, who ended the meet in fine style with a record run of 3:45.72 in the 4x400 metres, tallied 244 points to finish ahead of UTech 136, UWI 81, Mico University College 57 and College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE) 24.

In the male section, champions UTech scored 185 points to G.C. Foster's 183 points. They were followed by UWI 150, Exed 53.5 and CASE 19.

World Championships 200-metre finalist, Anneisha McLaughlin, competing in her final Intercollegiate Championships for UTech, had an easy victory in the women's 400-metre final.

McLaughlin clocked 54.22 seconds, beating teammate Salcia Slack who was second in 56.00. G.C. Foster College's Tamara Keane was third in 56.10.

McLaughlin was not concerned about the comparatively slow time. Her main objective was to gain points for her team

"I have been doing the 400 metres this season for strength training for my 200 metres and I was only concerned about giving valuable points to my team," McLaughlin said after her run.

In the men's 400m, Exed Community College's Omar Johnson had a surprise win in 47.07 seconds to get the better of UTech's Peter Matthews (47.52) and G.C. Foster's Lammoy Bogle, 48.25.

G.C. Foster athletes were one-two in the women's 800 metres. Lovan Palmer, 2:14.97, beat Roxcine Salmon, 2:15.25. UTech's Salcia Slack was third in 2:15.40 .

Strong head wind

The Spanish Town college also finished first and second in the women's 100-metre hurdles as Ladonna Richards won in 15.36 seconds, running against a strong head wind. Her teammate Junielle Baker was second in 15.93 and Mico University College's Lacy Ann Johnson third in 16.70

G.C. Foster dominated the 200 metres. World 400 metres representative Anastasia LeRoy won the women's event in 24.16, ahead of teammate Audra Segree, 24.21 and Carrie Russell, 24.94.

Adolphus Nevers, 21.31 took the men's event. UWI's Jason Young (21.40) and David Dunn (21.45) were second and third, respectively.

Odayne Richards of UTech produced his second record of the meet following his record throw in the men's discus on Friday's opening day. He produced a throw of 18.69 metres in the shot put to better his one-year-old record of 18.23m to beat G.C. Foster's Raymond Brown (17.54m) and Shawn Samuels (15.91m).
