John Mills lead

Kiona Bradshaw of Windward Road Primary and Junior High was the standout performer on the opening day of the 32nd staging of the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) All-Age and Junior High Athletics Championship being held over three days at the National Stadium, as she broke the record in the girls' shot put open, which had stood for 15 years.

However, Bradshaw's effort was not enough to gain her team the lead at the end of opening day, as Windward Road lie second on 53 points after five finals.

Sixteen-time defending cham-pions John Mills hold a 14-point lead, having amassed 67 points. The top 10 is completed by Central Branch All-Age (19), Cockburn Gardens (13), Rock Hall (12), Louise Bennett Coverley (10), New Day (four), St Theresa (three), Red Hills (two), while Swallowfield and Calabar Junior High are tied on a point each.

Bradshaw threw a distance of 10.03 metres to better the old mark of 9.90m that was set by Marsha Campbell of John Mills way back in 1996.

"I feel great, but I did not expect to break the record," 15-year-old Bradshaw expressed.

Kadesha Cauldwell (8.45m) of John Mills captured the silver medal, while the bronze went to Windward Road's Georgia Myrie (8.22m).

Central Branch All-Age got the day started in grand fashion, as they claimed first and second in the first final of the meet, the Class Three boys long jump. The event was won by Bradley Milford with a jump of 5.09m, with Carnett Abbott (5.06m) a close second. The bronze medal went to Jason Terrelonge (4.91m) of John Mills.

Heavy favourites John Mills' first gold came by way of Rene Medley, who captured the Class One girls' high jump. Medley, who last year set a new record in winning the event at Class Two, cleared 1.60m to take gold. Lisa Blackwood (1.50m) and Chantina Downer (1.40m), both of Windward Road, captured second and third, respectively.

Despite winning, the 15-year-old Medley was disappointed.

"I am disappointed because I was going for the record," she said.

John Mills were not done there, as they dominated the afternoon session, taking first and second in both the Class Two girls' high jump and the Class Three girls' long jump.

Ellis Shanae took the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m ahead of Actavia Bennett, who also cleared 1.35m. Third went to Windward Road's Chaddae Rainford (1.35m). The placings were determined based on countback.

The long jump was won by Ginnelle Grant (4.64m), with Aquilla Morris (4.27m) second, while Jody-Ann Porter (4.13m) wrapped up the bronze.
