McClure sets Carifta record

PRISCILLA McClure established a Carifta Games record, one of three national age group records, on Monday's third day of the regional swimming championships in Barbados.

McClure, competing in the 13-14 girls' 50-metre breaststroke, saved her best swim for last, significantly lowering the 36.16 she recorded in the preliminaries with a blistering 34.72 timing in the final, a new meet record.

In the same age category, the boys quartet of Antoine Young, Timothy Wynter, Justin James and Matthew Lyn, combined for a gold medal performance in the 800m freestyle relay in 8:31.11, a new national record.

The girls 15-17 category, Kendese Nangle, Breanna Roman, Alexia Royal-Eatmon and Victoria Ho, decimated the former national record of 9:17.83 in the final on the way to winning gold, with a time of 8:57.25 in the 800m freestyle relay.

Kendese Nangle (15-17 girls' 200m individual medley) and Matthew Chen (15-17 boys' 100m freestyle) won silver.

Three Jamaicans won their third bronze medal of the championships to add to Jamaica's success on Monday. They were Brittney Campbell (40.02 - 11-12 girls' 50m breast-stroke); D'Agaene Clarke (1:03.67 - 11-12 girls' 100m freestyle, and Timothy Wynter (55.31 - 13-14 boys' 100m freestyle).

Heading into the final session last night, Jamaica were fourth overall in the points standings on 421; and eighth overall medal standings with 26 (seven gold, 10 silver and nine bronze) on yesterday's fourth and final day.

However, the Jamaicans, based on the amount of swimmers they had qualified for the event's remaining finals, had a good chance of improving their position.
