Powell-led team wins at Penns

Former world 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell ran the opening leg as Jamaica's men scored an impressive men's 4x100 metres victory in the USA vs the World clash at the Penn Relays yesterday.

The quartet of Powell, Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Steve Mullings (in running order) clocked 38.33 seconds to beat a Mike Rodgers-led USA Red team, second in 38.43, and the USA Blue team which took third in 38.43.

Jamaica earned a second win in the USA vs the World clash, topping the women's sprint medley in 3:34.64, just outside the world record of 3:34.56 set two years ago by another Jamaica, quartet. The winning quartet yesterday was Simone Facey, Kerron Stewart, Melaine Walker who ran 51.3 seconds on the 400 metres third leg, and Kenia Sinclair with a 1:57.06 split on the final 800 metres leg.

Jamaican teams were third in both the women's 4x100 and 4x400 metres, while a weak men's quartet was fifth in the 4x400 metres.

The United States Blue team which included Lauryn Williams, Allyson Felix, Marshevet Myers and Carmelita Jeter turned back the Jamaicans in a record sprint relay run of 42.28 seconds, erasing the old mark set of 42.33 set in 2000 by another United States quartet. The United States Red took second in 42.28 seconds, while Jamaica were third in 42.74. The Jamaica team in running order was Kerron Stewart, Sherone Simpson, Aleen Bailey and world and Olympic 100 metres champion, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce.

The Red Team of Felix on the second leg and Sanya Richards on anchor won the women's 4x400m in 3:22.92 with their Blue team finishing second in 3:23.17, and Jamaica, third in 3:23.82. Shericka Williams, Novlene Williams-Mills, Christine Day and Kaliese Spencer were the members of the Jamaican team.
