Second Jamaica Choral Scholars' Festival on today

Published:Saturday | June 11, 2011 | 12:00 AM

The works of several of Caribbean sacred music composers will form the core of the Jamaica Choral Scholars Festival recital, titled Caribbean Hymnology, to be held at the Andrews Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church today at 5 p.m.

The recital is being held under the patronage of His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, governor general of Jamaica, and Lady Allen.

The second Annual Jamaica Choral Scholars Festival features music from Lisa M. Narcisse's Jamaica Church Folk Cantata for mixed Choir and Folk Orchestra, and other Caribbean works. The recital is the culmination of the Jamaica Choral Scholars' Festival - a two-week event of intense rehearsals, music theory seminars and lectures covering the study of Caribbean choral music.

The members of this scholars' programme include talented singers from all across Jamaica, ranging from high school seniors to business professionals.

The programme will feature an array of music composed by Jamaican musicians, as well as performances of choral and vocal compositions and arrangements done by Andrew Marshall.

There is no charge to attend this recital. Guests are invited to be seated by 3:45 p.m.

The Jamaica Choral Scholars' Festival is directed by Andrew Marshall.

Marshall made history in 2010 with his completion of the first-ever full sym-phonic work for a five-section orchestra, Run-A-Boat Symphony No.1. He has composed and arranged over 60 musical works and is currently completing doctoral studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Each year, Jamaica Choral Scholars' Festival trains scores of young and aspiring musicians, singers, directors and other performers in the rudiments of choral music with particular emphasis on Caribbean compositions.
