LIME/INSPORTS primary football league
The inaugural LIME/INSPORTS All-Island Primary football league culminated at the National Arena on Wednesday with a prize-giving ceremony for the over 280 primary school teams that participated in the 2011 competition.
Represented were players, coaches and supporters from the 14 parish champion teams, including Lacovia Primary School, who copped the first-ever National Primary School football title at Spanish Town Prison Oval last Friday.
Stephen Price, regional special projects manager, LIME, congratulated the players for what he described as "very promising football talent".
He further affirmed the company's sponsorship of the grass-roots programme, saying, "Football continues to be the most popular sport in Jamaica, and in order to secure the country's further success we have to invest at the schoolboy level."
Sports Minister Olivia Grange also registered her support for the competition, saying her ministry was committed to ensuring the development of sports at the primary level, and that our future athletes get every opportunity to succeed. She commended the parents of the players for their support for the country's most junior footballers.
The telecoms company presented Lenovo desktop computers with high-speed Internet for the schools of the 14 parish champions, and mobile handsets for the coaches and leading goalscorers from each parish.
Ajay Chin, a 10-year-old student of the Prospect Primary School in Manchester, and top goalscorer for the league, said: "Through this competition, I have learnt to never give up and to play as a team." Chin secured a total of 18 goals for his team over the six-month playing season.
LIME best Broilersin BH cricket
The 2009 champions LIME beat defending champions Jamaica Broilers by 51 runs in their top-of-the-table Reggae Jammin Business House 50-over cricket match at Cable and Wireless ground, Chalmers Avenue, recently.
Batting first, LIME were dismissed for 181 in 42.4 overs. National player Horace Miller led the scoring with 51, Omar Allison got 41 and Kensington Senior Cup player Ryan Francis 24, against Nicoy Lindo 3-5 and Wayne Morgan 2-5.
Jamaica Broilers in reply were bowled out for 130 - Aaron Johnson 30; Andre Henry 19; Francis taking 3-27 and Damion Jacobs 3-37.
AT KENSINGTON PARK
Digicel defeated NWC by 43 runs in another Reggae Jammin fixture. Digicel: 152 all out off 44.1 overs - Sadique Henry 40, Gregory Buchanan 23; Garwain Johnson 4-35, Oneil Wright 2-26. NWC: 109 in 34.4 overs - Wright 25, Christopher Senior 23; Kerry Scott 3-15, Henry 2-5.
Meanwhile, the second round of the Business House 35-over competition was played last Sunday and defending champions LIME found themselves on the receiving end.
They were beaten at Kensington Park by fellow communications giants Digicel in a rain-affected match.
Digicel, batting first, made 176 for eight of 35 overs - Sadique Henry 31, Gregory Buchanan 29; Yanique Elliott 3-21. LIME made 163 for five in 31.3 overs - Elliott 37, Omar Allison 29; Shane Brooks 3-13.
AT SPRING VILLAGE
Jamaica Broilers beat JUTC by 16 runs. Broilers: 154 all out in 31 overs - Marlon Lindo 47 not out; Mark Greenwood 3-33. JUTC: 138 off 32.4 overs - Michael McLeod 22; Fitzroy Bryan 3-19.
AT MONA
NWC beat Red Stripe on a faster run rate in a rain-affected match. NWC: 194 for eight off their 35 overs - Domain Wilson 79, David Morgan 36; Glenroy Christie 4-45. Red Stripe: 132 for six - Junior Ricketts 41; Kemar Fraser 28; Wilson 2-11.
AT JAMALCO
Home team Jamalco defeated NHT by five wickets. NHT: 132 all out - Shacoya Thomas 53, Colin Johnson 7-12. Jamalco: 133 for five off 31.3 overs - former national player Maurice Kepple 39 not out, Peat Salmon 25; Frederick Hermitt 2-14.
The 30-over Best Dressed Chicken KO competition moves into its second round tomorrow with four matches scheduled. These are NWC vs LIME at Mona, Red Stripe vs Jamaica Broilers at Red Stripe Oval, Sagicor vs NHT at Chalmers Avenue, and Jamalco vs Continen-tental Baking Company at Jamalco. All matches start at 10 a.m.
Business Housecricket presentation
The Business House Cricket Association, in association with Digicel and associate sponsors Jamaica Broilers Group, will tonight host the annual BH cricket awards presentation dinner at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston, starting at 8:00.
The night's major award will go to Jamaica Broilers, who defeated the 2009 champions LIME in the Reggae Jammin 50-over league final at Kensington Park last year.
LIME, meanwhile, won the three KO competitions organised by the board. These are the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over competition, along with the Noranda Bauxite Partners 35-over and the Digicel 20/20 competitions.
Mystix Strikersstop leaders Starliner
Pattex Cup champions Mystix Strikers clipped Zone 'A' leaders Starliner 6-5 in their feature Wray & Nephew White Overproof skittles match last Sunday at Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road.
Mystix raced into a 5-0 lead, only to see Starliner reply strongly by winning five consecutive games to tie the scores at 5-5 going into the 11th and final game.
However, Mystix's Ryan James held his nerve to beat his opponent A. Smith via sinkers to seal the issue. Despite the loss, Starliner are still zone leaders with 14 points, two ahead of former champions Eagles, who have played one match fewer than Starliner.
Eagles, meanwhile, gained a walkover from Dragon at Eastern Skittles Club, Windward Road, last Sunday, while home team Eastern All-Stars came from three games down (0-3) to beat Rowe's Strikers 6-4.
At The Dip in Gregory Park, The Dip drubbed Hangover from Portmore 6-2, while Mister C defeated Olympic Strikers 6-3 at the same venue.
Willies Strikers maintained their lead in Zone 'B' with a 6-3 win over Mercury at Mystix,.
The competition continues tomorrow with another Super Sunday promotion at Eagles Skittles Club, Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza.
The matches on are Mystix vs Dragon at 1 p.m., Eastern vs Waltham Strikers, Rowe's Strikers vs Eagles in the feature match, Hangover vs Lady Strikers, Mister C vs The Dip, and Mercury vs Olympic Strikers.
Bittersweet winfor The Gleaner
The Gleaner scored a bittersweet 3-1 win over JUTC at Tinson Pen in the opening round of the Scotiabank Group-sponsored Business House KO football competition on Tuesday.
Despite the win, The Gleaner players and management were unhappy after their midfield general, Donovan Alvaranga, broke a leg in two places following a vicious tackle on him in the 10th minute of play.
Alvaranga, who represented Super League champions Cavalier last season, was rushed to the hospital for treatment and, according to reports, he will be out for the rest of the season.
In-form striker Fabian Swaby scored a brace for The Gleaner, while substitute Jason Gayle netted the third goal in the second half.
In another opening-round KO match, defending champions Wisynco also defeated Jamaica Customs 3-1 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, thanks to goals from Premier League players Girvan Brown and Kevin Mighty, as well as Domain Ball.
In two KO matches played on Wednesday, Division I champions Petrojam defeated NWC 4-1 at Tinson Pen, with goals from David Shultz (2), Ricardo Munroe and Anthony Palmer, while James Durrant scored the lone goal for NWC.
National Housing Trust defeated Jamaica Fire Brigade 6-5 on penalties after both teams were locked at 1-1 after full and extra times at Molynes Football Field.
The KO competition continues today with four matches, including the feature match between UWI and Scotiabank at UWI playing field, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Wray & Nephewteam pool tourney
Fourteen teams out of 16 have qualified for the next round of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum all-island team pool tournament.
With the final of the preliminary round scheduled for today, the teams which have already qualified are:
Rural teams
Group A - Unbeaten MoBay Proper 'A' who are unbeaten in five matches have maximum 15 points, ahead of Gold Room (10) and Negril's Palm Court (8). Two will advance.
Group B - MoBay Proper 'B', who are also unbeaten in five matches, have 15 points, ahead of Marshall (8) and Kendan (7).
Group C - There is a three-way tie among The Spot, Strawberry and Spot One, each with 11 points. It will be interesting to see which two advance to the last 16, but one could end up as one of the best third-place teams.
Group D - Upper Level from Mandeville and St Georges are joint leaders with nine points, but Upper Level have completed their fixture. Both will advance from this group.
Corporate area
In the Corporate Area division, unbeaten Chelsea Seals, with maximum 15 points from five matches, have advanced from this group, along with Mystix Knights on 11 points.
Group F - Chelsea Strikers lead with nine points, ahead of Mystix Imports (6). Both will advance.
Group G - Bombay Sports Lounge and Hot Shots Fury with 13 and 12 points, respectively, will advance from this group.
The two other teams that will qualify as the best third-place teams are in groups A, B and C. Play continues this evening at 10 venues in town and country.
Delta Force win St Thomas football league
Delta Force drew 1-1 with Prospect FC to capture the St Thomas Captain's Bakery football league last Sunday in St Thomas.
Rudolph Daley, the season's leading marksman with 14 goals, scored for Delta Force, while A. Smith replied for mid-season champions Prospect FC, who needed to win by a wide margin to claim the title.
In the end, the Kevin Bryan-coached Delta Force with 36 points captured the title before a large crowd to be $100,000 richer.
Studds are Manchester U17 champions
Studds FC won the Power Services-sponsored Manchester Under-17 competition with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mile Gully Youths, which essentially comprise Under-16 players from Manchester High.
The victory was achieved in extra time when Krista Green scored in the 100th-minute to break the regulation-time score of 1-1. Studds' championship win was actually coming against a team to whom they had lost 4-0 in the preliminary stage. In fact, they lost their first two games, the other defeat coming against Star Liner, where they lost 3-2.
However, the Brian Sterling-coached side rallied to make the second round as the second-place team behind Mile Gully Youths. They produced giant-killing performances thereafter. They beat the Mile Gully FC 4-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals, before Oshane Newman's lone strike carried them past Hillstars in the semi-finals.
Los P stun UWI 15-0
Los Perfectos achieved the highest margin of victory to date in the Sherwin Williams National Senior Women's Football league with a whopping 15-0 win over the University of the West Indies at Brook's Park on Wednesday.
Captain Sashana Campbell led the rout, scoring six goals, with the trio of Carla Samuels, Shaneca Ingram and Sashalee Cooper netting twice. There was one each from Nugene Nugent, Simone Honeghan and Monique Gayle.
The huge win lifted the Mandeville-based team to 14 points from six games, but they still trail unbeaten leaders and defending champions Barbican. Los Perfectos, who play away to Olympic Gardens today, have outstanding games against Harbour View and second-place Portmore United.
There should be little reprieve for newcomers UWI as they entertain Barbican today at home. They are yet to earn a point after six games.
Cobbla Church League
Defending champions George North continue to be overall leaders of the New Testament Church of God Cobbla Church Football League, played at the Cobbla Youth camp grounds, near Spaldings.
George North, who are unbeaten after three games, lead Zone One on nine points, five clear of Christiana Strikers and Gully Strikers, who are both locked on four points. Spring Ground lead Zone Two on seven points over the pair of West Road and Lazio, who each have four points.
In last weekend's matches, Christiana Strikers and Clandon Strikers drew 1-1. The second scheduled match did not materialise as Richmond failed to show to play Church United. No games will be played tomorrow as there is an official church function under way.
Clarendon Business House league kick-off
The Clarendon Business House Football competition will be launched tomorrow at the Mineral Heights playing field, starting at 7 a.m. Twenty teams have been registered, along with defending champions Juici Patties. Sponsors are Tait's Pharmacy.
PFM Int'l shines at cricket awards
Champions Power of Faith International walked away with five awards, including four individual accolades, in a recent awards presentation for the Power of Faith Ministries Church Cricket League at the Power of Faith Multi-purpose Complex. They snatched four individual awards, including two by fast bowler Michail Powell.
Powell took most wickets in a match, 6-11, at an average of 2.8 runs, and most wickets in the competition, 13 wickets for 58 runs in five matches with a measly average of 3.2 runs from 18 overs. Glen Wellington took the best wicketkeeper award. He scored 154 runs, in six matches, with a top score of 74, snatched three catches and two stumpings, while teammate Peter Harrison scored most runs in the league. His statistics read: six matches, 199 runs, highest score 68, average 39.8.
Albert Rose of Victory Open Bible took home the best all-rounder award, with batting/bowling skills. He scored 129 runs in four matches, and took six wickets at an average of 3.6 runs. Old Harbour New Testament copped two individual awards: best bowling figures, Everton Richards, and Aaron Graham, the best U-17 player in the tournament. Nicholas Richards of the Seniors (over-40 team) got the accolade for most runs in a match 98.
Portsmouth in the lion's den
Portsmouth, fresh from their 5-2 win over minnows Garveymeade,
Portmore have steamrolled their opponents, racking up five victories in as many matches and lead the standing with 15 points. Malique 'Messi' Foster, their main striker, has scored 10 goals in five games and his supporting cast combined for another. Portsmouth, who won their first match of the season, 2-1 over Daytona, have lost three games in a row before their win over Garveymeade. The home team has depended heavily on Alex Medley for scoring goals and he has seven goals thus far.
In the opening game at the venue, Westchester take on Garveymeade. While Westchester have held their own, copping seven points in five games, Garveymeade are yet to get a point and linger at the bottom of the standings on zero. In a double-header at Cumberland, second-place Wanderers oppose Clifton, while Cumberland tackle Daytona at 3 p.m.
18 teams down for Pines Imaging football
Eighteen teams are down to compete in the 2011
In matches to be contested, defending champions Wanderers open their 2011 campaign against Cedar Grove at 1 o'clock, while at 3 p.m. Portmore United tackle Braeton United in a Braeton derby. This year is extra special for Pines Imaging Centre, as they have been doing business in Portmore for 10 years, and to mark this feat each team will get 10 Puma balls.
Additionally, Pepsi will hand out refreshments while GraceKennedy will have giveaways. Leander Marshall, the president of the Portmore Football League, has asked all teams to be present at the venue before noon. Teams which do not attend the dress parade will not be allowed to compete.
Three games on in Milo cricket
The Milo-sponsored Portmore U-15 Cricket League continues tomorrow with three games.
At the Portsmouth ground, Portsmouth CC, boasting three victories from three tries, take on Reid's Pen. Last Sunday, Portsmouth defeated newcomers Portmore Pines by 153 runs, as Andre Thompson led the way with with 71 runs.
In other games, defending champions Ken's Wildflower oppose lowly placed Cumberland at the Bridgeport Sports ground, while Colours Inter-national tackle Hamilton Gardens at Hamilton Gardens. All games begin at 11 a.m.
Manchester host Level One coaching course
The Manchester FA, in association with the Jamaica Football Federation, will host a Level One football coaching certificate programme starting on Monday.
Venue will be Church Teachers' College in Mandeville. Twenty-four persons have already been confirmed but applications and payment will still be accepted on Monday. The course will last for two weeks with a break for the first weekend. The lead instructors will be national coaches Vin Blaine and Wendell Downswell.
