Air Youth Champs on TV live
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The IAAF World Youth Championships has just concluded in France. I congratulate our athletes for winning nine medals, including four gold. Half of a loaf is better than no bread, and they got more than half of the pie.
However, my main concern is this: like the senior World Championships and Olympic Games that are always shown on television, we would definitely and happily welcome the live showing of the World Youth Championships on national television in the future. This would be wonderful entertainment for our people.
During the last Olympics and World Championships events, in Beijing, China, and Osaka, Japan, we heard that the crime rate had declined a bit in Jamaica. Wasn't that good news?
We have seen then that sports events, such as track and field, cricket, etc, that bring national attention and great excitement, can be of great importance and a remarkable antidote in bringing down the crime rate for a while.
Sports events such as these can also play a vital role in uplifting our youths from a loss of enthusiasm for life because of the lack of employment, because of financial difficulties and the temptation to get involved in drugs, etc.
Furthermore, generally speaking, sporting activities can relieve us of stress, boredom, unhappiness and depression, especially in this age where so many people are discouraged, are facing financial crises, etc. and don't know where to turn.
So let us go forward with the world of sports that can bring lasting and thrilling entertainment to us.
