Broughton, Allsideson top out west

When action resumes in Group C of the 2011 Social Development Commission's (SDC) National Community Twenty20 Cricket Competition next weekend, it will do so with a top-of-the table clash between Westmoreland's champion Broughton CC and their Trelawny counterparts Allsides.

In last weekend's first-round double-header, which was played at Elgin Town Community Centre, the star-studded Broughton upstaged Hanover's champions Elgin Town CC by 41 runs, while in the second game Allsides surprised St James' champions Farm Heights by 13 runs.

In next weekend's games, slated for the Bounty Hall Community Centre in Trelawny, Broughton and Allsides will square off at 10 a.m., while in the second game, Farm Heights and Elgin Town will meet at 2 p.m.

Good opener

Batting first against Elgin Town last weekend, the Paul Palmer Jr-led Broughton amassed 154 all out off 19.3 overs. Vanriel Bloomfield top-scored with 51, while all-rounder Denville McKenzie and skipper Palmer were next best with 26 and 19, respectively.

The major highlight of the innings came when the burly McKenzie and the lanky Myron Wilson combined to take 32 runs off one over, blasting four sixes and two fours to put the Westmoreland team in command.

Bowling for the Elgin Town team, Edgar Plant had two wickets for 15; Javoy James two for 21 and all-rounder Gary Campbell two for 24.

In their reply, the Elgin Town batsmen struggled against the accurate bowling of McKenzie and the veteran Cleveland Davidson, who both exhibited great control, making run-scoring very difficult. In fact, at the end of their 20 overs, Elgin Town could only manage 113 for six.

All-rounder Plant was the top batsman with 38 runs. Christopher Watson, who got an unbeaten 20, and Campbell, with 18, also got into double figures. Davidson and Wilson took two wickets each.

In their game against Farm Heights, which was reduced to 15 overs because of bad light, Allsides batted first and made 110 for eight off their allotted overs. Skipper Oral Rankine got a top score of 30, while Marlon Whyte and Rupert Green chipped in with 16 and 15, respectively.

Bowling for Farm Heights, Deon Dennis and Dalton James, with two wickets for 11 runs and two wickets for 16 runs, got most wickets.

In their turn at bat, Farm Heights' victory chase ended in disappointment as they could only manage 97 runs for seven wickets off their 15 overs. Tyrone Johnson, with 27, and skipper Samuel Evans, with 12, got most runs.
