Mullings takes double

ARZANA, Italy (CMC):

Steve Mullings continued his impressive form this season with a sprint double at the International Terra Sarda meet on Saturday.

The Jamaican sprinter cruised to a nifty 9.93 seconds in the men's 100 metres, and brought the curtain down on a memorable evening in the Sardinian village with a time of 20.22 in the 200m.

Mullings said the two wins were a timely boost of confidence ahead of next month's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Satisfying race

"I am satisfied with my race," said Mullings, the Jamaica 200 national champion. "I know I am going to have to run 9.8 to 9.7 low to be on the podium.

"I know a lot of people will be turning up to run, especially my [compatriots] Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake."

Mullings has a 4x100 relay gold medal from the 2009 World Cham-pionships, but he has established himself this season as one of the main challengers to Bolt's reign, and desires to become a track legend.

Lerone Clarke, another Jamaican, finished behind Mullings in the 100, clocking 10.13, and had to settle for third in the 200 with a time of 20.97.

Shericka Williams and Lansford Spence, two more Jamaicans, also got decent workouts in the 400s.

Williams was the women's winner with a time of 51.06, and Spence was the men's winner in 46.38.

Olympic women's 100 silver medallist Sherone Simpson finished second in a time of 11.32 in her pet event behind American Alexandria Anderson, whose time was 11.12.
