'Russians' win big again - Rampant STETHS maul Newell 17-0

The goal-scoring machine of reigning daCosta Cup champions Rusea's High School rolled over yet another opponent yesterday afternoon when they spanked a hapless Merlene Ottey 6-0 in their Zone B fixture at the Colin Miller Complex in Lucea, Hanover.

However, unlike their previous two games, the star was not last year's golden boot winner Brian 'Rambo' Brown but the previously unheralded Demar Doeman, who scored a hat-trick. Substitute Wackel Williams (2) and Leaton Galloway got the other goals for Rusea's.

"It was another good performance by the boys and we have reasons to be happy," said Rusea's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams, whose team now has maximum nine points from their three games. "Twenty-three unanswered goals in three games must be saying a lot about the offensive power of this team."

Best day of season

Meanwhile, 2009 champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) had their best day of the season as they roughed up Newell High 17-0 in their Zone F fixture. Kevon Farquarson (4), Jamal Sinclair (3), Rushane Scarlett (2) and Gavin Banton (2) spearheaded the goalscoring.

"Like the fans, I was just looking on and watching the players executing the things we have been working on in practice," said STETHS' coach Andrew Edwards. "A result like this is a big confidence booster going forward."

Interestingly, the STETHS team, which previously had 5-0 wins against DeCarteret and Balaclava is now the competition's most prolific team with their 27 unanswered goals.

In the big Zone A Montego Bay derby at the Montego Bay Stadium between eleven-time champions Cornwall College and 2008 champion St James, the latter, despite wasting a spate of chances including a missed penalty, came away with a 2-1 win. Jason Malcolm, who missed the penalty, got both goals for St James High while Oniel Robinson got the consolation goal for Cornwall College.

In Zone E, the much-anticipated Savanna-la-Mar derby between the Aaron Lawrence-coached Manning's and former champions Godfrey Stewart High School was somewhat anti-climatic as the Manning's team ran out comfortable 4-0 winners. The win takes Lawrence's team to maximum six points from two games.

In the other two games in Zone E, Petersfield spanked Maud McLeod 5-2 while Grange Hill clipped Little London 3-2. Grange Hill win takes them to six points and joint leadership of the group with Manning's.

In Zone H, the red-hot Edwin Allen High School made it four wins from four starts, clipping last year's beaten finalist Lennon High School 1-0.
