WESTERN BUREAU:

Cornwall College's steady resurgence in Zone A of the 2011-12 ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition was given some additional momentum yesterday afternoon, when they defeated William Knibb High 2-0 to move into second place in the group.

For Cornwall College's coach Hopeton Gilchrist, whose team scored through Romario Lawrence and Michael Rickman, getting back solidly into contention for an inter-zone place is the best thing that could have happened to his team at this time.

Players showing character

"It has not been the best of seasons so far for us, but the players are showing a lot of character and that is pleasing to see," said Gilchrist. "Now that we are in second place we need to stay there and qualify for the inter-zone round."

While Cornwall College were flourishing against William Knibb, group leaders St James High dropped points for the second consecutive game, playing to a 0-0 draw against Irwin High. As a consequence, the unbeaten St James are now on 20 points.

In the third game in the group, Green Pond were in spanking form, blanking Muschett 4-0 to join Spot Valley in third place on 14 points. Spot Valley were inactive yesterday.

In Zone B, champions Rusea's were not at their fluent best, but still managed a 3-0 win against Merlene Ottey to extend their impressive 100 per cent record to nine games and a tally 27 points. Star striker Brian Brown scored once to take his season tally to 21 goals.
