Alphanso Cunningham mined gold for Jamaica yesterday at Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Competing in the F51/52/53 category of the discus event, Cunningham threw 25.18 metres to beat the field.

Jamaica appeared set to challenge for a medal in the 800m T46 final, but David Bascoe pulled up on the final bend, while he was in fourth and making a bid for a medal position.

The country barely missed out on winning a second medal yesterday as Kevon Reid came fourth in the shot put in the F54/55/56 class. American Scott Winkler won the gold. Reid threw 9.19m, the third best throw, but due to the fact that Mexico's Noriega - who took silver - was classified in a lower class, he was pushed off the medal stand. Cuba's Leonardo Diaz won silver.

Newnham fourth

Jamaica's Jonathan Newnham shot rounds of 77 and 70 to finish tied in fourth place in his category in the annual Optimist Tournament of Champions. On day two, Newnham shot the low gross in the second and final round of the 36-hole strokeplay tourney, which took place at the International Course at Champions Gate Golf Club in Champions Gate, Florida.

The Tournament of Champions is contested by boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18. The International Course at 7,300 yards provides a challenging layout with over 130 bunkers and compact greens. Newnham competed against a field of almost 50 competitors in the boys' 16-18 category. Approximately 100 juniors competed in the entire event.

Sri Lanka win

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP):

Opener Upul Tharanga made 77 and fast bowler Lasith Malinga claimed three wickets yesterday to lead Sri Lanka to a 25-run win over Pakistan to level the one-day international series at 1-1 with three matches left. Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene (50) ensured Sri Lanka reached 235-7 in the second match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Pakistan spinners Saeed Ajmal finished with 3-61 and Shahid Afridi 2-35.

Malinga took two wickets in his first over in capturing 3-31 as Pakistan were bowled out for 210 off 46.3 overs, with Umar Akmal (91) the only Pakistani batsman to score more than 30. Pacemen Thisara Perera took 2-30 and Dilhara Fernando 2-54, while Sri Lanka's fielders also supplied three fine run outs.
