Facebook post 'reckless'
GEORGETOWN (CMC):
The opposition grouping, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has described as "reckless and an incitement to public disorder" results being posted on the social network, Facebook, by the ruling People's Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), in violation of existing electoral laws.
APNU, which includes the main opposition People's National Congress Reform, said it is calling on the chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr Steve Surujbally, to deal with the matter since the "PPPC and its presidential candidate are proclaiming on Mr Donald Ramotar's Facebook page that the PPPC has won the elections.
"APNU expects the Guyana Elections Commission to address this violation of their expressed wish that no party or organisation announce election results before the commission makes public the official count," it said, adding that "APNU views the proclamation of victory by the PPP/C as reckless and an incitement to public disorder".
Figures released so far by GECOM show that the APNU has 21,563 votes, with the Alliance for Change 3,636, the PPP/C 19562 and the United Front 52.
A total of 475,496 voters were eligible to cast ballots to elect members to the 65-member National Assembly.
