'Tis the season for letting those around us know that we care. And that is exactly what members of the Patrick Gardens Senior Citizens' Club did when they hosted their annual Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, December 14.

The community centre at the intersection of Wilkinson Drive and Beatrice Close was the venue for this meet-and-greet as old friends and neighbours, some of whom had lived in the community for 40 years, came together in the spirit of the season.

The cheerful, light-hearted luncheon began with the singing of carols and laughter that continued throughout.

Guest speaker Dr Hume Persuad, the consummate entertainer, had the gathering in stitches as he lent humour to serious issues. He outlined seven very important aspects of health and the steps to be taken to maintain them, including socialising within the community.

Taking a jovial jab at the former member of parliament for the area, Derrick Smith, who was in attendance, he advised the gathering of the importance of maintaining a waist circumference of 35 inches for women and 40 for men.

As it was a time for celebrating, two community members were lauded for their contribution to the community.

Linval Ford, hailed for always being willing to lend a helping hand, was singled out for recognition. He was serenaded by the group with the chorus He's a Jolly Good Fellow.

Rufa Archer, who founded the Senior Citizens' Club in 1996, was also recognised.

It was a great way to spend an afternoon with neighbours in the spirit of the season.
