DJ Nicco takes top spot
Red Bull Thre3style competition continued despite Isaac
DJ to represent Jamaica in Chicago final
DJ Nicco's remarkable energy and mixing talents topped a field of six highly skilled DJs to win the Red Bull Thre3style DJ competition, held last Saturday at Club Riddim.
Even as Tropical Storm Isaac lashed viciously outside, loyal supporters of the six competing DJs - DJ Narity, DJ Richie D, DJ Nicco, DJ Naz, DJ Inferno - (who replaced DJ Sanjay) and DJ Karim - poured into the club and enjoyed a great night of music, dancing and free refreshments alongside some of the industry's top acts such as Biggy of the duo Raz and Biggy, Voicemail, Denyque, DJ Kurt Riley and DJ Timeless.
As anticipated, the competitors all brought their 'A' games and rocked the club with stimulating 15-minute performances that included all genres of music with pulsating hits, ranging from old-school reggae to the futuristic dubstep. But it was DJ Nicco, the third to perform, who distinguished himself from the group with a vibe-filled set that thoroughly engaged patrons and, most important, pleased the judges - entertainment moguls DJ Captain Colin Hines, Claudette Powell and Christopher Edmunds.
DJ Inferno finished second, while DJ Narity rounded off the top three.
surprising outcome
"I am still surprised by the result, but very happy that the crowd and the judges were able to see my heart," said an excited Nicco after being announced the winner.
"I put a lot of effort into preparing mentally and ensuring a right mix for what I see as my fan base, and evidently it worked. I have to big up Red Bull Thre3Style for the opportunity and I am going to Chicago to represent for all our Jamaican DJs that were here tonight!"
Speaking to what placed Nicco above the others, Hines noted that "DJ Nicco walked away with the top spot because he had the most well-executed set, evidence of preparation, and you could tell that he took this opportunity very seriously."
As for the competition itself, the veteran DJ praised the concept.
"I thought it was a very good competition and I am happy that I was able to be a part of this. For years I have been an advocate for DJs who have smarts, talent and skill," said Hines.
DJ Nicco will now go on to compete in the Red Bull Thre3Style global final in Chicago from September 24 to 29, where he will battle winners from 18 countries around the world.
