LIME HALL, St Ann:

THE LIME Hall Community Development Council (CDC) donated a wheelchair to an elderly shut-in at its recent empowerment and health fair held at the community centre.

The fair attracted entities such as Heart/NTA, Sagicor, Red Cross, Jamaica 4H, and youngsters who participated in six-a-side football matches.

Community members were given free blood pressure, blood sugar and HIV tests, and nutrition counselling, among other things.

To end the day, hot meals were served to shut-ins in the community.

"The fair was very good. It was splendid," Victoria Christie, CDC president, told Rural Xpress.

Christie said the CDC teamed up with the Social Development Commission (SDC) to secure the wheelchair, which was donated to Agnes Morrison. Morrison's grandson, Warren Williams, collected the wheelchair on her behalf.

While lamenting the lower-than-expected turnout at the fair, due in part to rain, Christie said the objectives were nevertheless achieved.

"It was very informative. I think those who came out got a lot of information. I only hope that next year, it will be better supported," Christie said.

Parish development officer for the St Ann branch of the Jamaica 4H Club, Tedroy Gordon, said he was pleased with the club's participation in the fair.

Improving

"It was a successful day," Gordon said. "This is my third year here, and I see it is growing. It is improving."

The 4H club focused on healthy lifestyle, using vegetables such as carrots and beetroot to make drinks.

"We also looked at sandwich making. We looked at the red peas sandwich, carrot cheese sandwich, and cheese sandwich. Those were some of the main highlights of 4H today, and the members of the community greatly appreciate it," Gordon said.
