In response to Gordon Robinson's article 'Sex dirty? Screw them!' (Sunday Gleaner, February 16, 2014), I'd like to offer a more balanced view.

To broad-brush Christians as hypocritical and bigoted is ignorant. I can speak for most true followers of the Lord Jesus across denominational lines: We practise what we preach and we love instead of hate.

Mr Robinson's article does nothing to promote safe and sound sexual practice. The article, instead, feeds the already overstimulated minds of many young people who are inundated daily with sexually explicit messages and advertisements which inevitably lead to disastrous societal effects.

Where did Mr Robinson get the idea that Christians practise unimaginative sex within their monogamous unions? I'd hate to think he has visited every Christian's bedroom! We Christians proudly practise monogamy. Mr Robinson, however, has no way to substantiate his claim of Christians' lack of imagination in the bedroom, nor is it any of his business.

Ask all those who "freely" practise sexual activities outside of marriage and you will find long and hard tales of broken hearts, illegitimate children, and disease.

Mr Robinson then jumps on the anti-Christian bandwagon to accuse the Church of homophobia! A homophobe is somebody who is afraid of homosexuality. We, true Christians, are not afraid of homosexuality and we practise our faith by loving people even when they hold views absolutely contrary to ours. Orthodox Christian doctrine clearly teaches a family consists of a man and a woman joined in matrimony for propagation and mutual sexual satisfaction.

The author furthermore attempts to shed negative light on Christians by implying true followers of the Lord Jesus still should follow Old Testament capital punishment regulations. This innuendo clearly exposes Mr Robinson's lack of understanding of orthodox doctrine.

Drowning in a Sexual Swamp

Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are on a crucial mission. We see a society drowning in a sexual swamp mostly promoted by people who have no religious affiliations. There is no such thing as 'safe' promiscuity. Rejecting traditional family values has exacerbated the breakdown of societal structures, and illegitimate births are on the rise with the corresponding misery that accompanies such a trend. The humanist sexual agenda is empirically unsound.

Just like a good physician clearly tells the cancer patient he is sick and needs proper treatment, we Christians must offer our society tested and proven sexual answers.

Can we find small-minded people in all theological and philosophical camps who skirt around the truth about sexual conduct? Of course. Are most preachers afraid to address the issues? Of course not. The majority of preachers will speak strongly and clearly about such matters.

Do Christians have the monopoly on great sex? Of course not. As a Catholic Christian, I stand for life (NO abortion) and I promote abstinence (NO contraception). All those who practise abstinence before marriage don't get a sexually transmitted disease, don't make children out of wedlock, and experience the fullest possible matrimonial sexual satisfaction free from the fear of being traded in for a better lover or for somebody with better bedroom tricks.
