HANOVER:

Residents of Harding Hall in Green Island, Hanover, are calling on the relevant authorities to address the poor road conditions in the community.

According to them, the road in the community serves as an alternative route to the Green Island town centre whenever the section of road leading from Prospect in the vicinity of the Harding Hall School is blocked due to flooding. However, the road conditions have been affected by a channel which had been altered and which now deposits the run-off from rain across one of the two entrances to the community.

One resident, Delvie Walcott, in venting her frustration, says the blame should be placed at the feet of the Hanover Parish Council.

"I'm angry. I'm a taxpayer and look at the condition of the road!" Walcott fumed. "The place needs to be bushed, it looks like the wilderness. The parish council needs to do something."

According to Walcott, the lack of adequate street lighting has also compounded the problem, as residents fear for their safety at night.

"It's not safe at night; there are no street lights. I have to use this road at night, if a gunman is coming after me, how will I escape with roads like this?" Walcott queried.

When contacted, councillor of the Green Island division and chairman of the Hanover Parish Council, Shernett Haughton, pointed to a lack of funding as the main hindrance to addressing the woes of the residents.

"I have requested street lights for that area as well as other areas in the division. I'm well aware of the needs of the residents of Harding Hall, but because of financial constraints, we are unable to address the issues as we would like to," said Haughton.
