Airline pulls out of Guyana

As high world oil prices threaten the region’s tourism industry, an American air carrier has announced that it will be terminating its Guyana service.

North American Airlines, which has been operating flights to Guyana for nine years, said it has no option since the cost of fuel is affecting the company’s bottom line.

Director of Sales at the Airline, Peter Bogovich, said fuel cost has been skyrocketing and as a result it has been difficult for the airline to cope with the prices.

He said the airline is not able to pass on all of the price increase to its passengers. As a result, it no longer makes economic sense to continue operating in Guyana.

Mr Bogovich said the airline remains optimistic that the fuel situation would improve to allow the airline to return to the Georgetown route.

He said another North American carrier, Travel Span, has signalled its intention to lease the aircraft to operate a charter service over the peak summer season.
