‘No increase in basic food prices’ – Cuban authorities

Cuban authorities have been trying to reassure the island\'s citizens that basic food prices will not be increased.

Recent storms ravaged 30 per cent of Cuba\'s crops and officials have warned of food shortages that could last six months.

A decree in state-run newspapers has warned that vendors charging more for fruits and vegetables will be punished.

It says prices at agricultural markets will remain fixed at levels set by regional communist committees.

The government also warned of a crackdown on those who steal food and construction materials from work and sell them on the black market.
