The President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, has led the tributes to David DeCaires, one of the country\'s best known journalists.
The co-founder and editor in chief of the Stabroek News newspaper died in Barbados on Saturday.
He was 70 years old.
DeCaires was being treated for a heart condition prior to his death.
Both President Jagdeo and the Guyana Press Association have praised Mr. DeCaires\' contribution to the opening up of the media in Guyana.
De Caires and his wife, Doreen, established the newspaper in 1986, a time when there was no press freedom in Guyana.
He reportedly helped engineer change by allowing criticism of the government to be published in Stabroek.
