LIME disconnects police cell phones

Telecommunications provider LIME has been forced to disconnect cell phones assigned to the Antigua police force.

Justice Minister Collin Derrick said the force owes the company a substantial amount.

He said the cell phones were being abused by police officers.

Police Commissioner, Thom Bennett, had earlier said the cell phones were disconnected in error, but later admitted that the phones were being abused.

He could not say the exact amount owing to the telephone company.

In 2006, 100 cell phones were distributed to members of the police force but some officers reportedly abused their privilege by using the phones for personal use, including making overseas calls.
