Turks and Caicos UPDATE
A special panel of inquiry has recommended the suspension of the Constitution of the Turks and Caicos Islands following the damning findings of corruption and impropriety in the Government of the British territory.
The panel has also recommended that Parliament be dissolved and an advisory council established.
Associate Editor at the Sun Newspaper in The Turks and Caicos Islands, Vivian Tyson, said that the announcement was made today and that the Governor has indicated that the changes will take effect at the end of April.
EArlier today the governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands announced plans for a partial suspension of the Constitution, ending ministerial government for two years.
The announcement follows the release of the interim report from the Commission of Inquiry that investigated alleged corruption on the part of the Michael Misick-led administration.
This means that there will be no cabinet of ministers or House of Assembly for that period and that the British government will be fully in charge of the affairs of the overseas territory.
The order is slated to take effect on March 25 pending the approval of the British monarch.
