Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson was crowned Trinidad and Tobago’s Sportsman of the Year, while boxer Jizelle Salandy was awarded the woman’s title posthumously at the First Citizens Sports Foundation awards on Wednesday night.
The 23 year old Thompson, in his first Olympiad, landed the award after he claimed two silver medals at last year’s spectacle in Beijing.
He finished second in the men’s 100-metre final in 9.89 seconds, behind Jamaican sensation Usain Bolt and returned to win silver again with Trinidad & Tobago’s sprint relay team.
Salandy, who died on January 4 in a vehicular accident, was honoured for her world record eight world titles.
