Jamaicans advance to semifinal
Jamaicans Deandre Whitehorne and Kemar Bailey-Cole have kept their hopes of advancing to the medal round of the 100 metres alive on today’s opening day of the sixth International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy.
After two rounds, Whitehorne and Bailey-Cole have advanced to the semi-final round of the sprint event.
Whitehorne booked her place following a second place finish in Heat Two of the Women’s 100 metres. She clocked 11.92 seconds behind winner Jodie Williams of Great Britain, who clocked 11.71.
Bailey-Cole qualified for the semi-final following a third place finish in Heat 5 of the Men’s 100 metres. He clocked 10.77 in a race won by Takumi Kuki of Japan in 10.63.
Jamaica’s Adam Cummings failed to qualify after a fifth place finish in Heat 4.
In the Men’s 400 metres, Jamaica’s Javere Bell won Heat One in 48.16 to qualify for the second round, while his teammate Sandrae Farquharson finished third in Heat Two of the Women’s 400 metres to book her place in the other round.
In the Women’s 400 metre hurdles, Jamaica have qualified two athletes for the second round. Ristananna Tracey won Heat One in one minute 01.24 seconds and Danielle Dowie took Heat Three.
