Asafa settles for second

Former world record holder Asafa Powell had to settle for second as American Tyson Gay sent a strong message to Beijing Olympic triple gold medallist Usain Bolt with a fast 9.77 seconds to win the 100 metres at the Golden League meet in Rome earlier this afternoon.



Gay swept pass Powell 40 metres from the finish to record the fastest time of the year. The time also equaled Gay’s personal best.



Powell finished second in 9.88, and fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake was third with 9.96.



In the women\'s 100, Jamaican Kerron Stewart was still in contention for a share in the one million jackpot after three legs of the six-leg Golden League.



Olympic silver medallist Stewart won in 10.75 ahead of Olympic champion and countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser, who crossed in 10.91.



There were three other second place finishes for Jamaica at the meet.



Delloreen Ennis-London, 12.67, took second in the women’s 100-metre hurdles behind American winner Dawn Harper, who clocked 12.55. Brigitte Foster-Hylton of Jamaica ended third in 12.68.



Beijing Olympic silver medallist, Shericka Williams finished with 50.31 behind Sanya Richards of the USA, who clocked 50.31.



Isa Phillips, 49.11, lost to Kerron Clement of the USA, who did 48.09.
