Guyana confirms election postponement

The Guyana Elections Commission has confirmed that long overdue local government elections will not be held until next year.

Local government elections were last held in Georgetown 15 years ago.

Last week, the government voiced its disappointment and loss of confidence in the Elections Commission at the prospect of another delay.

However, Commission chairman, Steve Surujbally, says one of the main reasons for the postponement is the government’s late release of funds for preparations for the poll.
